The Swedish Red Cross Youth
The Swedish Red Cross Youth is a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and exists to prevent and alleviate human suffering. We are committed to, and bound by, the following Fundamental Principles:
Humanity
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavours, in its international and national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, co-operation and lasting peace amongst all peoples.
Impartiality
The movement, does not discriminate any nationality, race, religious belief, class or political opinion. It endeavours to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs, and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress.
Neutrality
In order to continue to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in hostilities or engage at any time in controversies of political, racial, religious or ideological nature.
Independence
The Movement is independent. The National Societies, whilst auxiliaries in the humanitarian services of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the principles of the Movement.
Voluntary Service
It is a voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.
Unity
There can only be one Red Cross or Red Crescent Society in any one country. It must be open to all. It must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory.
Universality
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, in which all Societies have equal status and share
equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide.
Get involved!
The Red Cross Youth in Sweden has many areas and programs which seek to create a better world for young people. We have however focused our efforts around five themes which all strive to create a more secure and accepting environment for young people today.
We work to prevent discrimination
Program: Tolerance Trips
Members have the opportunity of visiting former concentration camps through Europe to widen their understanding of historical racial prejudice. Understanding the history of racial injustice can go a long way to preventing acts in the future. Members can then demonstrate their knowledge and their experiences through activities in schools and work.
Program: Quick Response:
The idea behind Quick Response is to follow how the Swedish newsmedia reports on immigration, integration and xenophobia. On our website we publish our own articles about the media´s coverage of these issues.
Quick Response was set up in order to review and react to media reports on questions concerning immigration, by an initiative from the national co-ordination committee of the European year against racism.
Our work is mainlyaimedtowardsjournalists, to boost disussion among them.
Quick Response is an independent part of the Swedish Red Cross Youth.
We work to promote sustainable development
Program: Fair Trade
We distribute information about Fair Trade, including the countries involved, the workers and working conditions and other important issues. By becoming a Fair Trade knowledge worker, members can educate others though presentations and other activities at school and work.
We work to promote international understanding
Program: Make a difference!
The Swedish Red Cross Youth are committed to working for a more tolerant and free world, through international activities and projects aimed to reduce injustice and abuse in different cultures. We promote fair trade and equal opportunities and work against global intolerance and use of weapons and landmines.
Program: 3+3 Exchange
Our exchange program is an exciting and invaluable opportunity for young people to visit Uganda for 3 months. There our member will work and live closely with a local partner, and will be completely integrated into the society and culture. After three months, the Uganda partner will have an opportunity to visit and stay with the member in Sweden for 3 months. This can also work with the partner from Uganda visiting Sweden first.
We work to strengthen the rights och young refugees in Sweden
Program: Cosmo Friend
Our program Cosmo friend aims to strengthen de social network and wellness of young refugees in Sweden. Every week our volunteers meet young refugees from all over the world. During the meeting they exchange experiences, hang out, create common projects anddo social activities.
We work to strengthen the social wellness for youth in Sweden.
Program: Friends on Duty:
Our friendship program helps and provides support to young people in times of needs. Our young members befriend others who need help about any problem, for example: love and sex, loneliness, drugs, emotional problems or racial prejudice.
Our support telephone line provides a way for young people to speak to youth about their problems and issues. Callsare always confidential and can be anonymous if preferred. Our members are here to listen and give tips where the caller can get professional help if needed.
This hotline is used by youth aged 13to 25. Our trained members who answer the calls are between 18 and 30 years old.
